7 Government Schemes Every Smallholder Farmer Should Know in 2026

From PM-Kisan to e-NAM to PMFBY, these seven central schemes can mean an extra ₹20,000 to ₹80,000 per year for a 2-acre farmer. Most are under-claimed simply because farmers do not know they exist.

Why this list exists

In our conversations with farmers across five states, fewer than 1 in 3 knew about half the schemes they were eligible for. The application process is rarely difficult — the hard part is knowing the scheme is there and understanding what documents you need.

Here are the seven we recommend every smallholder check first.

1. PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi

₹6,000 per year direct to the bank account of every landholding farmer family, paid in three instalments of ₹2,000. You need an Aadhaar-linked bank account and land records. Apply at the nearest CSC or pmkisan.gov.in.

2. PMFBY (Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana)

Crop insurance against natural calamities, pests and diseases. Premium is just 2% for kharif and 1.5% for rabi food/oilseed crops. Loanee farmers are auto-enrolled; non-loanee farmers must apply each season.

3. KCC (Kisan Credit Card)

Up to ₹3 lakh credit at 7% (with 3% prompt repayment subsidy, effective 4%). Use it for inputs, cattle, fisheries. Apply at any bank with your land record.

4. e-NAM

A national online mandi platform. You can sell directly to buyers in other states without going through the local APMC, often at 8-12% higher prices. Register at enam.gov.in.

5. Soil Health Card

Free soil testing every 2 years with specific fertilizer recommendations for your plot. Avoid over-applying urea — typical savings of ₹2,000-4,000 per acre per year. Ask your block agriculture officer.

6. PMKSY — Per Drop More Crop

50-90% subsidy on drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. Cuts water use by 30-50% and labour by 60%. Especially valuable for vegetables and orchards.

7. Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization

40-50% subsidy (higher for SC/ST and women farmers) on tractors, power tillers, threshers, and many smaller implements. Most state agriculture departments have an online application portal.
