Why We Built KhetiGPT on WhatsApp — and Why Farmers Trust It

Over 500 million Indians use WhatsApp every day. For farmers, it is not just another app — it is how they already speak to family, traders, and KVK officers. Here is why we chose to meet them there.

A channel farmers already trust

When we started talking to farmers in Maharashtra, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in 2025, one thing became obvious: most of them did not want another app to install, log into, or update. Smartphone storage is limited, mobile data is expensive, and a new icon on the home screen rarely survives the next "low storage" warning.

But every single farmer we spoke to had WhatsApp open within a few seconds.

How KhetiGPT works on WhatsApp

You send a message — in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu or English — about a yellowing tomato leaf, today's onion price, or a PM-Kisan question. Our AI replies within seconds with a short, practical answer in the same language. If the question needs a human expert, we escalate to the nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) officer.

There is no app to install. No password to remember. No data to lose.

Built around safety, not hype

AI is powerful, but agriculture decisions affect families and livelihoods. So KhetiGPT has guardrails that you can see:

• We never recommend a pesticide brand without a generic safe alternative and dosage.
• We always tell you when a question is beyond AI's confidence — and offer a human escalation.
• We do not share your phone number, location, or messages with input sellers without your explicit permission.

What is next

In the coming months we will add voice support (because many farmers prefer audio), photo-based crop disease detection, and a free FPO dashboard. The platform stays free for farmers — always.
